Journey of a Quilter: Block 4

Congrats to Elka for winning last month draw for the completed blocks…she won a cute trio set of Gingher Rulers…congrats!!

Hi Everyone, how are you enjoying this beautiful quilt? How are you enjoying the Journey? I know I am 🙂

For Block 4, the only thing new is a trio of hearts to applique…this was a nice block to complete I’m almost done the stitiching…

Enjoy

here’s your fabrics, remember to prepare your silks

cut according to colour

layout as per diagrams, placing colours accordingly or where you would like them to be 🙂

For this mb 1, sew the bottom row together first, then the 2nd row and you’ll see the other two fall into place

mb1 measures 8 1/2 h x 9 1/2 w, set aside your brown squares for the heart template applique until the end.

mb2 cute little nine patch in the middle, sew together first, then do top row

mb2 final size is 8 1/2 h x 6 1/2 w

for mb 3

layout all pieces accordingly

prepare your half square triangles

complete your half square triangle nine patch

for this one you are going to sew the 1st row and 3rd rows together first, then sew the 4th row together, making sure you press well as you go, then sew all 4 rows together

mb3 measures 7 1/2 h x 9 1/2 w

mb 4 is pretty simple

finished mb4 measures 7 1/2 h x 6 1/2 w

Finished Block 4 now onto the tracing

prepare applique by tracing hearts onto lightweight fusible interfacing, if you don’t have any fusible web, you can trace them out, cut with scissors, pin onto background and stitch around about 1/8″ in from edge of heart and sew them down raw edge to your background or you can do needle turn applique method.

hot, dry iron onto the wrong side of fabrics, cut apart and attach to the background in mb1

here’s the final block with the stitching completed

I tried a satin stitch on the celebrate flowers, the hearts turned out adorable!

I also tried some other embroidery stitches as you can see bottom right corner

Looks challenging, I am very excited to get my hands on it. Did you still want me to send in pics, for my late projects 🙁 I am going to be on a mission to get these two done this month!

Hi Amie, Yes please send in your pics, this goes for all of you including the pattern only people, it would be so great to see what you’ve used for fabric choices 🙂
    Good luck Amie!

I had troubles with this one. It never seemed to be wide enough. Ex~mb1..the bottom rows, I had to add in another strip because mine wasn’t wide enough. So instead of having nine across, I have ten. Mb4, the very bottom strip, I had to add in a little strip again because mine wasn’t wide enough either(I added it to the left of the nine patch). Am I doing something wrong? They are so not the right size that I have to add in a piece or the whole block would have been off by at least 1/2 inch or more. I mean, I just added in strips so it didn’t matter, but why does yours work and not mine. What do you think?

Oh, also, I don’t know what ‘needle turn’ applique is. Help me 🙂

  5. Valerie says:

Hi Amie, I think the problem with your rows not being wide enough is your seam allowance is too wide. Try to be very accurate with your 1/4" seam allowance, this will help so much. Measure the placement of your needle when it goes into the fabric and move the needle sideways to increase or decrease the seam allowance. If you can’t move your needle move your fabric over more to the right to make your seam allowance smaller – I’m sure without seeing your project that it’s the seam allowance as this is the number one thing that makes the most errors 🙂
Needles turn applique is when you trace a template i.e the heart onto freezer paper (buy at Safeway) iron shiny side onto wrong side of your fabric, fuse with hot dry iron, cut around shape leaving approx 1/2" of fabric all the way around, press fabric against the heart template so it’s all folded in around the shape, remove the freezer paper, pin to background fabric and needle and thread stitch by hand to the background fabric. The "needle turn" part means that if the shape starts to come out then you use your needle to put it back in place snug it back into the shape it’s supposed to be, needle turn.
    Hope this helps 🙂

Just curious…is the middle block next? or is it last?

    Isobel 🙂

PS Valerie, did you get my email about the floss?

  7. Amie Twemlow says:

Humm…I thought my seam allowance was off too, but I double checked it. That was my first thought when it hapened. I have no idea what I did wrong, but it really hasn’t been a problem~I just add in another color strip and I’m good.
I just ‘winged’ the applique, I have never done them before. I love the way they turned out, and I just used the fusible interfacing stuff. Very excited about this block, I love all the colors and the new things we are doing!! Thanks Val!!

Isobel: Yes the middle block is next, I’m almost done the stitching and it’s pretty cute!
Yes I did indeed get your email !
Amie: I’m so glad you are enjoying your blocks to much 🙂

Ladies: The middle block, aka Block 5 will use a lot of Molasses, so those of you who are running low, please let me know so I can include one in your kit – thanks!

  9. Vivian says:

Great job everyone! I haven’t done the stitching yet so I’m way behind!!!

Valerie if it’s not too late I am running low on the molasses!

BTW, watch your email I’m sending something as we speak (well as I type and now that you’ve read).
